One of the most important fishing towns (pop. 4.000) in Iceland is on the main island and 1/3 of all houses in the town were destroyed in a volcanic eruption 1973. There is a new ferry port on the mainland south coast and the crossing takes only some 30 minutes. A day tour is very interesting with a tour of the main island and the new lava field, inspection of some houses which were burried in volcanic pumice, a bird watching boat tour around the islands and steep sea cliffs. This tour can be added to a tour of the south coast or as a day tour from Reykjavik.
